THINGS TO DO
Harz Hotel Waldhaus is located in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve, where there is plenty to discover and experience. On this page we provide a number of tips. Be inspired!

Goslar
About 14 kilometers from our hotel, lies the historic city of Goslar. Known for its authentic half-timbered houses, beautiful buildings and even an imperial palace, this city has earned a well-deserved spot on the Unesco World Heritage List.
You can wander along the medieval city wall or walk along the Abzucht stream, which flows right through the city centre.
There is a pleasant market square with a real carillon (Glocken- und Figurenspiel) on top of one of the buildings, now a beautiful hotel.
Every day at 9am, 12pm, 3pm and 6pm, figures pass by, showing the beginnings of the mining industry.
The Rammelberg
Speaking of mines, take a look at the 636-meter high Rammelberg. Formerly the most famous silver mine in the region and now a museum.
Goslar is full of museums worth a visit, with its rich history there is a lot to tell.

The Christmas Market
There is often something to do in Goslar. Every year in December there is a Christmas market with a real forest in the middle of the city.
The whole city is decorated and there are all kinds of stalls. Have a mulled wine, eat a bockwurst, buy a hat and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.
Walpurgis Night
On April 30th, the Harz people show their spooky side. They move to the Blocksberg (a number of meeting places on hills and mountains) to celebrate the Witches' Sabbath.
Walpurgis Night is the witches' festival in the Harz. More than 1000 years ago, the "primitives" of the Harz celebrated the festival in which various sacrifices were made to Wodan, the Germanic leader of the gods. Today it is an event not to be forgotten. Boiling witches' cauldrons in towns such as Hahnenklee, Braunlage, Bad Grund, Sankt Andereasberg, Schierke and Thale, but also in Goslar all the magical figures come to life. Dressed as witches, devils and other creatures, there is dancing, laughing and partying. An unforgettable experience to be part of.

The Okertalsperre
The Okertalsperre is a dam just a stone's throw from our hotel. The reservoir, the Okerstausee, has a water surface of 2.25 m2 and is used to generate electricity and is also a water source. The dam wall is very impressive with its 67 meters high.
There is plenty to do, water sports, walking around the Okertalsee or mountain biking. From the beginning of March to the beginning of January there is a boat. Or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Two villages, Unterschulenberg and Mittelschulenberg, were located in the area where the reservoir was to be built. The inhabitants were given a place in the new village of Schulenberg. Those who want to admire the villages can do so during a dive in the underwater world. And they say that when the water is very clear and very still, you can see the village from the water surface and hear the church bells ringing.
The Adlerklippen walk
The Adlerklippen walk starts next to our hotel. This takes you past the Adlerklippe, which attracts many climbers every year. The Marienwand also attracts many climbers. There are also courses to follow to learn how to conquer such a rock yourself. You can make the walk as long as you want.
Along the way you will encounter various rocks with a legend or story. A real waterfall is also not missing during a beautiful walk in the beautiful nature of the Harz.

The Ochre
Also next to our hotel, the Oker. With its 105 kilometers long and various side branches, you will regularly encounter it during a walk or on the bike.
In the summer a babbling brook near the hotel. But in the winter a wild river because of all the melting snow.
You can canoe on it, but also paddle through the rapids in a kayak. So there is plenty to do on the Oker.
Winter sports
Winter sports enthusiasts will also get their money's worth in the Harz. There are several places where you can ski to your heart's content, as soon as it has snowed. In places like Altenau, Hahnenklee and Braunlage, a short half hour from our hotel.
The largest ski area in the Harz is located on the Wurmberg with a 10 kilometre long descent, supplemented by three other small ski areas in the middle of Braunlage with a fantastic view of the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz. There is also an artificial ice stadium, several toboggan runs, ice climbing possibilities and a network of 80 kilometres of cross-country trails and 100 kilometres of hiking trails.
Afterwards, enjoy the après-ski bars and huts and your winter fun will be complete.

This is a small selection of the many activities and festivities that the Harz has to offer. Add the nature, the hospitality and the holiday feeling and you will never want anything else.
